Plastic Surgery Summer Research Program

The Hansjörg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery offers medical students at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and outside medical schools a summer research program in which they gain valuable exposure to the exciting and multifaceted field of plastic surgery research.

As a participant in this eight-week program, you gain experience in basic science or clinical research, learning to design experiments and studies under the mentorship of our faculty and postdoctoral scientists.

As part of the program, you are required to present during Plastic Surgery Grand Rounds. Students who make significant contributions to ongoing studies may have authorship on conference abstracts and papers.

The program provides opportunities to present relevant articles and data in weekly lab meetings and journal clubs, develop basic surgical skills through suturing workshops, and attend teaching conferences run by faculty and residents. Students participate in professional development workshops throughout the 8-week period. You can also attend a question and answer session with current residents.

Research Topics

Summer clinical research positions are available with Eduardo D. Rodriguez, MD, DDS, with the opportunity to investigate topics in craniofacial surgery and face or hand transplantation, and with Mihye Choi, MD, and Nolan S. Karp, MD, in the areas of breast reconstruction and breast support products. Positions are also available with Ernest S. Chiu MD, in wound healing therapies and monitoring strategies.

Basic science research positions are available with Piul S. Rabbani, PhD, in the areas of chronic wound healing and biomaterials for tissue repair or regeneration. A position in biomedical ethics is available with Laura L. Kimberly, PhD, focused on ethical considerations in allotransplantation and gender affirming care.

Stipend

The Department of Plastic Surgery provides all students admitted to the summer research program with a stipend. If you are eligible for the Federal Work–Study Program, we provide the additional funding you will need to attend the program. If you are not eligible, we fully fund your work for the summer. Work–study eligibility is not required to apply.
