Interstitial Cystitis

Definition:
A condition of the bladder that is caracterized by the symptoms of urinary urgency, urinary frequency, and pain. It is often accompanied by a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying, painful intercourse (dyspareunia), and / or generalized pelvic pressure or discomfort. Abbreviation: IC

How is IC diagnosed?

The National Institute of Health have developed a rigorous criteria set for diagnosisng IC. However, it is not practical to apply this set to all patients as it would require testing in the operating room. This type of testing does not to be done routine and may be best applied in a research setting.

A strong clinical suspicion of IC is made when a patient has urinary frequency, urgency and pelvic pain. Painful sex may be present as well.

The potassium sensisitivity test is performed when IC is suspected.
During the PST a small catheter (tube) is placed in the patient's bladder.

Several different solutions are placed in the bladder and the patient is asked to rate her discomfort.

If there is too much discomfort, Dr. Levey will instill a pain relief solution into the bladder.
