Bellevue Hospital Center

Bellevue Hospital Center is located on First Avenue between 26th and 29th streets in Manhattan.

Bellevue lays claim to being the oldest hospital now existing in the United States. Currently, it is the flagship hospital of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation and one of the more respected municipal hospitals in the country.

Bellevue has a history of excellence in pediatric care dating back to 1874 when Dr. Abraham Jacobi, Professor of Diseases of Children and the "father" of American pediatrics, was appointed to its medical staff. Today, Bellevue has a total of 62 in-patient beds for children, which include the general in-patient service, and the pediatric and neonatal intensive care units. Approximately 2,200 infants are delivered and admitted to its Low Risk (Level I) nursery each year. Bellevue is home to a large Pediatric Resource Center which provides comprehensive longitudinal health care in a brand-new, comfortable, friendly ambulatory setting to a large population of children in multiproblem families. The busy Pediatric Emergency Service, housed in a state-of-the-art 3,500 square foot dedicated clinical facility, cares for approximately 23,000 acutely ill or injured children, adolescents and young adults per year.

Bellevue Rotations

Rotations through Bellevue constitute a unique aspect of clinical training for the pediatric house staff. Evaluating patients who present without a diagnosis either in the in-patient or ambulatory setting creates an intense yet rewarding experience.

The relative autonomy offered the pediatric house staff by the faculty for the diagnosis and initial management of patients at Bellevue is an extremely valuable opportunity for the development of higher-order skills in medical decision-making unmatched by many programs of comparable size and patient diversity. Despite such autonomy, however, the pediatric house staff is never alone in formulating diagnostic or management plans for even the most routine pediatric admission, PL-4 chief residents, subspecialty fellows, and the attending staff are available for guidance and assistance 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

Tisch Hospital

Formerly known as New York University Hospital, Tisch Hospital today is a highly regarded health care institution with an international reputation for excellence and innovation. Tisch is a center of excellence for the treatment of children with neurosurgical, cardiovascular, oncologic, craniofacial and genetic disorders, and serves as an international referral site for patients with rare or complex disorders such as familial dysautonomia. The pediatric service at Tisch also delivers high quality in-patient care to a population of children with less complex medical disorders under the direction of an outstanding group of generalist pediatricians who comprise our community-based clinical faculty.

Tisch Hospital has 33 general pediatric medical-surgical beds plus intensive care facilities for neonates and older children. A 29-bed state-of-the-art neonatal intensive care unit was recently opened to provide comprehensive care for preterm or significantly ill infants.

The peripartum service is responsible for approximately 4,200 deliveries each year, many of which are high-risk pregnancies requiring joint management with our program in Perinatal Medicine.

The newly opened Lawrence D. and Lori Weider Fink Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a state-of-the-art, 13-bed unit providing critical care services to both medical and post-operative surgical patients.

The clinical experience at Tisch Hospital provides our house staff with an important hands-on perspective on the biology and management of complex medical and surgical conditions. Resident autonomy for diagnosis and management is somewhat reduced, given the wide variety and severity of illness among patients admitted; however, the house staff work together with attending physicians to help design evaluation and treatment plans for the current hospitalization, track each patient's progress, and assist in providing primary care while the child is hospitalized.

Despite the fast pace, Tisch is the site at which our house staff learn the skills to communicate effectively with patients, parents and colleagues on the health care team. Tisch provides a supportive environment for residents to learn to cope with the stress of caring for very ill infants, children, and adolescents.
