House Staff Responsibilities By Year

First (PL-1) Year

The first-year resident serves as the primary physician for all patients admitted to Bellevue and Tisch Hospitals, as well as for patients visiting Bellevue's pediatric clinics and emergency service. In both the in-patient and out-patient setting, diagnostic and management plans are formulated and implemented by the first-year resident under the supervision of senior house staff and faculty.

During the year, residents will have block rotations in:

  1. ambulatory pediatrics
  2. pediatric emergency medicine
  3. neonatal intensive care
  4. subspecialty pediatrics
  5. general medicine, including the in-patient wards at Bellevue and Tisch Hospitals.

Continuity clinic is attended twice weekly throughout the year: Night call is covered during regularly scheduled blocks of time during which separate "night float" teams provide coverage of the in-patient and out-patient services.

Second (PL-2) Year

The residents' experience in the second year expands in scope to include:

  1. supervisory duties
  2. direct care of critically ill neonates and children
  3. subspecialty pediatrics.

Block rotations include:

  1. ambulatory/emergency care pediatrics
  2. general medicine
  3. term nursery
  4. neonatal intensive care
  5. pediatric intensive care
  6. behavioral-developmental pediatrics
  7. adolescent health care
  8. subspecialty pediatrics.

Continuity clinic is attended twice weekly, and there is a night float block.

Third (PL-3) Year

In year three, residents supervise the in-patient medical teams at Bellevue and Tisch, the intensive care unit and the pediatric emergency service. Teaching is a key part of the year.

Block rotations include:

  1. ambulatory/emergency pediatrics
  2. general medicine
  3. neonatal intensive care
  4. pediatrics intensive care
  5. and subspecialty pediatrics.

As in years one and two, continuity clinic is attended twice weekly, and there is a night float block.

Chief Residency (PL-4)

Each year, two PL-4 chief residents are appointed based on demonstrated excellence in leadership, teaching, and clinical performance. The chief residents represent a vital clinical and academic link between house staff and faculty; they manage the house staff program and direct the house staff patient-care services at Bellevue and Tisch Hospitals, play a major role in education and clinical decision making, organize many of the departmental conferences, and perform diverse administrative functions.
