Pediatric Residency Program

Clinical Education Program Structure

The residency program is hierarchical and builds progressively on knowledge and skills acquired during each year of training.

The first year is devoted to the acquisition of basic scientific knowledge, cognitive (problem-solving) skills, and skills in procedures which are requisite for the on-going care of healthy children; the episodic care of patients with acute, intermittent disorders of a medical, surgical or psychosocial nature; and the comprehensive care of patients with chronic or severe illnesses warranting hospitalization.

The second year is devoted to increasing knowledge and developing organization, management, supervisory and leadership skills requisite for the comprehensive care of the pediatric patient, with an additional focus on critically ill neonates and children.

The third year is devoted to consolidating and optimizing cognitive competencies and clinical skills with a particular focus on teaching and supervision of junior housestaff.

Throughout all three years of training, the bulk of clinically relevant exposures occur in four major settings: the in-patient, perinatal, ambulatory, and emergency services.
