Clinical Education Program In-Patient Services

The educational goals and objectives for rotations through the general in-patient services at Tisch and Bellevue hospitals over three years include:

  • The acquisition of knowledge of cellular and molecular pathobiology
  • The pathophysiology of disorders of the major organ-systems
  • Understanding of aberrant developmental and regulatory process resulting in single or multiple organ-system anomalies, malignancy, or major psychiatric disorders

Cognitive competencies to be acquired during in-patient rotations over three years include:

  • The recognition and differential diagnosis of organ-system dysfunction
  • The restoration and maintenance of general physiologic and metabolic homeostasis
  • The pharmacotherapy of specific disorders including malignancies
  • Enteral and parenteral nutrition
  • The pre- and post-operative management of pediatric surgical patients, including the ethical issue of informed consent

Technical competencies include:

  • venipuncture
  • arterial puncture
  • bladder catheterization
  • nasogastric tube placement
  • lumbar puncture
  • broviac catheter management
  • conscious sedation
  • parenteral hyperalimentation
