Pediatrics Summer Programs for Medical Students

The Department of Pediatrics at New York University Grossman School of Medicine provides opportunities to medical students during the summer to augment their learning experiences in biomedical research while exploring clinical areas of interest.

The Pediatrics Summer Research Fellowship pairs each student with a research mentor who focuses on clinical or basic science research in either general pediatrics or pediatric subspecialties (e.g. pediatric endocrinology, cardiology, infectious disease, oncology, developmental and behavioral pediatrics, or emergency medicine). We do not offer opportunities in pediatric surgical subspecialties such as pediatric surgery, otolaryngology, orthopedic surgery, or neurosurgery.

The summer fellowship is geared toward first-year medical students, will be a six- week program (35 hours/week), and will run from June 3- July 12 2024; however, some students may choose to start earlier. While students may start earlier and have longer fellowship experiences, students must commit to ending no earlier than July 12, 2024, and spend at least six full weeks working on their projects. This summer fellowship incorporates a clinical shadowing component, which can be approximately be 1/2 day (~4 hours) per week. Due to this requirement and given the importance of in person collaboration as a fundamental part of the research process, it is expected that students will be on-site at least 3 days a week.

At the end of the fellowship, you will be expected to do a presentation of your project to your peers in the program and a panel of research mentors, who have worked with the fellows over the summer. Stipends are available only to medical students attending NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

There are two separate application processes:

  • NYU Grossman School of Medicine students apply through the system set up by the Office of Medical Education and the Office of Student Affairs. NYU students must submit the rankings via the website on Jan 1st, 2024. Results will be posted on March 1st, 2024. Further details on the application process will be distributed by the Office of Medical Education and the Office of Student Affairs.
  • For students applying from outside of NYU Grossman School of Medicine, please fill out the application. The deadline for application is January 15th, 2024. Acceptance notifications will be sent out in mid-March 2024. Students interested in research in the department at other times during the year are welcomed.
  • Please contact Denise Garcia at Denise.Garcia@nyulangone.org to learn more. For an overview of research in our department, view our “Research in Pediatrics” video, which features several of the mentors from the summer fellowship.

The fellowship is led by co-directors Alexander F. Glick, MD, MS, and Preneet Cheema Brar, MD, MS.
