Cytogenetics Pathology Services

NYU Langone’s Department of Pathology offers a range of cytogenetics pathology services to aid in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment approach for patients with malignancies. Our cytopathology service is led by Shashi Pawar, PhD, who is board-certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics. We provide reliable and highly accurate test results with minimum turnaround time.

We offer conventional cytogenetics and molecular cytogenetic services for the following types of samples:

  • tissue biopsies
  • bone marrow/peripheral blood (for leukemia and lymphoma)
  • lymphoid tissues
  • solid tumors

We also offer the following tests:

  • conventional banding techniques, including G banding, to identify chromosomal abnormalities in lymphoid, myeloid, and other neoplasia
  • fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) assays for the detection of translocations, deletions, and duplications in bone marrow aspirates/paraffin sections, peripheral blood, and tissues from patients with leukemia, lymphoma, and other hematological disorders
  • HER2/neu FISH test on paraffin sections from breast and non-breast tissue samples
  • UroVysion™ test for bladder cancer

The cytogenetics laboratory is an actively expanding diagnostic laboratory which annually processes approximately 2,000 samples and 10,500 tests on cancer specimens. Each year, we introduce a minimum of 5 to 10 new FISH tests to expand the scope of our services. Our goal is to be able to detect all possible abnormalities that may not be detectable through conventional chromosome analysis.

Turnaround Time

The average turnaround time is 21 days for chromosome analysis and 7 days for FISH assays. We attempt to provide STAT test results in fewer than two days.
