Women’s Pathology Fellowship

Led by director Farbod Darvishian, MD, NYU Langone’s Department of Pathology offers a one-year post-residency fellowship in women’s pathology. Our fellowship is not accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Our faculty researchers are based at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital and NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and we derive cases from these locations as well as from NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center, NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, and other area hospitals.

We accession more than 12,000 breast specimens (3,000 surgical specimens and 9,000 core biopsies) and more than 9,000 gynecology specimens each year. We have access to an outstanding variety of case material, including complex oncologic specimens that require in-depth clinical–pathologic correlations. We also have access to a growing whole slide image library of selected breast cases organized by pathological entity and structured into specialty topics with annotations and attached didactics. This library includes multiple self-assessment collections. Images are available to all fellows and can be viewed locally or remotely. Multiple glass slide study sets structured into specialty topics are reviewed in the course of the fellowship.

Women’s pathology fellows independently review cases and sign them out with the attendings. Fellows also teach and supervise residents and medical students, guiding residents in conducting gross and microscopic analysis of difficult cases. During the first month of training, fellows are required to gross breast and gynecologic specimens for two weeks each.

All of our fellows are encouraged to present at scientific conferences, and we participate in two tumor boards: a weekly gynecology board and a weekly breast multidisciplinary conference.

Fellows also receive intensive training in gynecologic and obstetric and breast surgical pathology and have ample opportunity to conduct clinical–pathologic research under faculty supervision.
