A 12 month fellowship program in the management of acute and chronic
pain syndromes leading to specialty certification is offered at
New York University Pain Management Center, after satisfactory completion
of a core Anesthesiology Residency Program. The Pain Medicine fellowship
focuses on the multidisciplinary approach with close ties to psychology,
physiatry, psychiatry, orthopedics and neurosurgery.
The clinical experience is diverse and includes diagnosis and treatment
of musculoskeletal system including pain of vertebral column origin
and spinal diagnostics, cancer pain and neuropathic pain states.
The Fellow receives extensive exposure and experience in the decision
making process, performance and peri-procedural management of the
interventional pain management techniques. The faculty has particular
expertise with interventional pain management techniques and the
procedures performed include the following:
- Interlaminar epidural steroid injections
- Transforaminal selective epidural steroid injections
- Intraarticular facet joint injections
- Medial branch nerve blocks
- Cervical, thoracic, lumbar discography
- Stellate ganglion blocks
- Lumbar sympathetic ganglion blocks
- Sacroiliac joint injections
- Radiofrequency neurolysis
- Brachial plexus catheter placements
- Spinal cord stimulator trials and permanent implantations
- Intraspinal catheter trials and permanent infusion pump implantations
- Permanent Du Pen epidural catheter implantations
The primary purpose is to provide the knowledge and skills needed
by a specialist practicing Pain Medicine. This is achieved by providing
the opportunity to develop skills in medical diagnosis, therapeutic
judgement, clinical care, teaching, administration and research
in Pain Management. A multi-hospital experience consisting of New
York University Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital Center offers
a broad diversity of clinical pain problems which allows development
of the requisite clinical skills and knowledge to become a Pain
Medicine specialist.
Inpatient clinical activities take place at the NYU Medical Center,
Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, Co-Op Care Unit and the
Bellevue Hospital Center. The outpatient care is provided at the
NYU Pain Management Center and Bellevue Pain Treatment Center. Additionally,
external rotations are available at the Hospital for Joint Diseases.
Fellows who complete one year of training in Pain Management are
eligible to take the American Board of Anesthesiology special certifying
examination in Pain Management, provided they have previously become
Board certified anesthesiologists.
A valid New York medical license as well as a DEA certificate are
required. The applicant must be anesthesiology board eligible or
certified.
