The Trauma and Fracture Division of the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases Department of Orthopaedic Surgery staffs five locations, as well as providing acute management of fractures in the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases’ Immediate Care Center and the emergency units of Tisch Hospital, Bellevue Hospital, VA Medical Center, and Jamaica Hospital. Upwards of 1,400 trauma cases are seen per year by the division.
The spectrum of cases treated ranges from patients with a single fracture to those suffering from multiple, life-threatening musculoskeletal injuries. Due to the nature of trauma cases, our orthopaedists share strong working relationships with the departments of Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery, and Vascular Surgery. State-of-the-art techniques are used in the treatment of associated injuries to nerves and blood vessels and incidents involving soft tissue loss.
Additionally, significant attention is given to comprehensive evaluation and care of geriatric patients with hip fractures, as well as coordinated care of patients with all types of fractures. Late reconstructive procedures are commonly performed on such conditions as nonunions, malunions, and osteomyelitis.

For Residents
The Trauma and Fracture Division is committed to resident and continuing medical education. Members of the division participate in teaching conferences, medical student lecture series, and the annual Howard Rosen Memorial Trauma Symposium coordinated by members of the service.

Orthopaedic Research
Both clinical and basic research is conducted by the Trauma Research Group with the assistance of two full-time research coordinators. There are currently 51 ongoing clinical research studies and 11 biomechanical projects being conducted by the group. Ongoing projects include outcome studies of geriatric hip fracture patients, fractures in the elderly, and laboratory evaluation of various fracture fixation devices.
