Samuels Orthopaedic Immediate Care Center

The Samuels Orthopaedic Immediate Care Center, New York City’s only walk-in orthopaedic clinic, has been treating over 7,000 patients with urgent or emergent orthopaedic problems a year since 1993 when a generous grant from the Samuels Foundation helped establish the Center.

Staffed by members of the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, the Center, or “I-Care” as it is known, uses state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment to evaluate and treat any and all urgent orthopaedic problems, including:

  • hand and foot injuries
  • suspected hip, arm or leg fractures
  • suspected dislocation or joint injury
  • sprains
  • suspected bone or joint infection

About 70% of I-Care patients are treated and released in 2 hours or less. Patients are first seen by specially trained nursing personnel to determine if immediate care is required. If so, an orthopaedist will further evaluate the patient, including ordering further diagnostic tests as necessary, suggesting immediate treatment, referring the patient to a specialist, and arranging for hospital admission. Multidisciplinary committee meetings are held biweekly to conduct performance assessments and continually improve the level of service.
