Jamaica Medical Center

Beds: 350

The Jamaica Hospital Medical Center is a Level-I trauma center located in Jamaica, Queens, NY, featuring a 7-room operating suite and a state-of-the-art pediatric emergency room added in 2001. NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases physicians are responsible for providing orthopaedic care at this facility.

Jamaica’s Orthopaedic Department consists of three full-time attendings with NYU School of Medicine faculty appointments, a full-time orthopaedic physician’s assistant, and several fellowship-trained voluntary staff members. In addition to the resident staff, there are two rotating physician’s assistant students and other rotating medical students. In 2002, the Jamaica service performed over 1,200 surgical procedures, 3,800 emergency room consultations, and 6,500 clinic evaluations.

The Jamaica Hospital rotation is a cornerstone of the NYU HJD residency program, providing essential trauma experience. The service has recently expanded their attending-level services to nearby Flushing Hospital. The sports medicine and upper extremity programs are also undergoing expansion. The physicians are team physicians for Queens College and several Queens and Bronx high schools. The research capabilities of the service are expanding greatly, and the staff is involved in building several trauma registries. Analysis of clinical cases in these registries has yielded several abstracts, meeting presentations, and peer reviewed publications in recent years.
