NYUHJD at Bellevue Hospital Center

Lobby of New Bellevue Ambulatory Center

The Orthopaedic Service at Bellevue consists of 7 full-time attendings, more than 60 voluntary attendings, 8 residents, and one full-time physician’s assistant.

Full consultation services are offered through emergency room and inpatient coverage. The department prides itself on the orthopaedic expertise applied at Bellevue in the areas of major fracture surgery, adult reconstructive surgery, hand surgery, and pediatric orthopaedic surgery.

There are also two innovative health programs run by the Department: an orthopaedic oncology center that serves the diverse needs of patients with tumors involving the musculoskeletal system and a sports medicine program for student athletes in the Public School Athletic League. (see below)

As a member institution of the Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) of the City of New York Bellevue Hospital Center’s mission is to render quality care to all patients regardless of financial resources. NYU Medical Center’s strong affiliation with Bellevue allows the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery to provide all orthopaedic care. To schedule an appointment at the Bellevue Orthopaedic Clinic, please call (212) 562-1213.

NYUHJD Orthopaedic Oncology Center at Bellevue
(Timothy B. Rapp MD Director)

The Orthopaedic Oncology Division of the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is a major referral center in the Tri-State Area for bone and soft tissue tumors.

A wide variety of pathologic diagnoses are treated, including benign and malignant tumors of bone, cartilage, and soft tissue. Patient care is optimized by a carefully coordinated interactive effort among diverse services, including Radiology, Pathology, Pediatrics, and Adult Oncology and Radiation Therapy, along with surgical oncologists in various specialties at NYU Medical Center.

The Division has introduced new concepts of limb-sparing surgery for children and adults affected by malignant bone tumors. The use of new diagnostic modalities, in conjunction with progress in chemotherapy protocols, has resulted in dramatic improvement in the survival of cancer patients. Limb-sparing surgery in children now uses the expandable prosthesis, which allows serial lengthening to overcome the expected limb length discrepancy. At the same time, the introduction of biological substitutes, including allografts and vascularized fibular grafts, allows durable reconstruction with complete restoration of ambulation with good social and cultural integration.

For more information or to schedule an appointment contact Dr. Timothy Rapp, Director of the Center, who may be reached at 212.731.6558

Education and Research at Bellevue Hospital Center

Bellevue Hospital Center is a cornerstone in the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases Residency Education Program. Rotations on the orthopaedic service at Bellevue provide an important component of each resident's training and education.

In January 2001, a Resident Research Center was established with a full-time Director of Research. The service is currently conducting studies on fracture healing, bone infection, anticoagulation therapy, and bone grafting.
