NYU HJD Physicians Give Hope to War Victims

Drs. Steve Lee and Laith Jazrawi were recently featured in the NY Daily News, the NY Post, NBC and various other media outlets for their work on behalf of two young patients injured in the Iraq war.

Ali and Mahmoud Abala, ages 8 and 10, had their hands burned and partially severed in a May 2005 blast in their native province of Al Anbar which has been rocked by violence. Both boys, once well-liked and successful students, faced ridicule from classmates after their disfiguring injuries.

A benevolent organization called Our Children International connected the boys with Dr. Jazrawi. They were then referred to hand expert Dr. Lee for complex operations to restore function to their hands. Mahmoud had a tendon transferred from his right finger to his middle finger to allow his injured finger to bend. Ali had surgery on both hands to make spaces between his fingers. The operations were performed at no cost to the boys and their family.
