'Interesting' idea leads to a mission of mercy – By Amanda Baskind
Take 17-year-old Emily Feldman, who told her family over dinner one night that she wanted to get involved in something "interesting." Now, the Englewood teen is in the midst of a two-week missionary trip to Eldoret, Kenya, along with her father, Dr. David Feldman, an orthopedic surgeon working to help those in need."I've always been interested in my dad's work and I'd been looking for something interesting to do," said Emily, who plans to one day practice medicine.

But the trip is only part of the endeavor. Emily and her 14-year-old sister, Talia, spent the previous nine months setting up KidsEquipWorld, dedicated to collecting expired or used orthopedic surgical tools and equipment from hospitals across the nation to ship to a new $15 million children's hospital being planned for Eldoret. While in Kenya, Feldman, chief of pediatric orthopedic surgery at the Hospital for Joint Diseases at NYU Langone Medical Center, will be performing four or five surgeries on children. Feldman said he wants to see "how I can help and what the needs are," calling this a "pilot trip." He added that he would eventually like to bring people back to the United States for training."This is not a one-time thing," he said. "This is what one should do, give back."
