The Adult Orthopaedic Surgery rotations represent the largest component of the 60-month experience. Services are conducted at Tisch, NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases and the VA during the second, third, fourth and fifth years of the residency program, with two to four residents on each rotation and under the supervision of a fourth- or fifth-year resident.
As residents progress through the rotations, residents assume increasing responsibility and gain experience in a wide variety of procedures, including:
- Arthritis surgery
- Arthroscopic surgery
- Foot and ankle surgery
- Orthopaedic oncology
- Primary and revision total joint replacement
- Shoulder surgery
Residents also have the opportunity to fulfill educational goals in the outpatient arena through extensive exposure to outpatient clinics and interaction with attending staff during office hours.
Adult Orthopaedic Surgery is also an important component of the Jamaica Hospital rotations during the second, third, fourth and fifth years. Although the primary emphasis is on fractures and trauma, both outpatient and inpatient experiences also focus on a variety of adult problems, including:
- Degenerative arthritis
- Posttraumatic deformity
- Pediatric orthopaedics
In this setting, the residents work closely together and with the attending staff to manage the service.
