Division of Foot & Ankle Surgery

The Division of Foot and Ankle Surgery, part of NYU Langone Health’s Department of Orthopedic Surgery, is one of the oldest in the United States. It was founded more than 75 years ago by a pioneer of the specialty, Dr. Paul Lapidus. Today, our faculty is committed to furthering that legacy with innovative surgeries that are at the forefront of contemporary patient care. We receive more than 10,000 patient visits and perform more than 800 surgical procedures per year, and are also dedicated to educating future experts and performing research in the field.

Foot and Ankle Surgery Education

At the Division of Foot and Ankle Surgery, our goal is to train medical students, residents, fellows, and visiting physicians to excel by exposing them to the vast array of conditions and injuries that we treat. Didactic morning conferences are supplemented with individualized teaching with faculty during office hours, in clinics, and in the operating room. Our faculty are internationally recognized surgeons specializing in adult reconstruction, diabetic foot care, sports injuries, arthroplasty, and minimally invasive surgeries, as well as nonoperative interventions including biologic augmentation and regenerative therapies for soft tissue injures.

Clinical activities take place at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital and at the Foot and Ankle Center located in the Joan H. and Preston Robert Tisch Center at Essex Crossing. Residents and medical students also rotate at our ambulatory clinics and at NYU Langone’s Diabetic Foot and Ankle Center and see patients during office hours.

Medical students wishing to explore orthopedic surgery may enroll in electives with our division as part of NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Curriculum for the 21st Century. House staff participate in rotations as part of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery’s residency program.

Foot and Ankle Surgery Research

The Division of Foot and Ankle Surgery has a rich legacy in research. Our faculty regularly publish their results in leading peer-reviewed journals and present their findings at national and international meetings. In 2019, a full-time research fellow was appointed to facilitate further investigations in basic science as well as clinical research projects. This research is typically a collaborative effort between medical students, residents, fellows, and often visiting physicians, who all provide input. We strongly encourage all medical students to become involved in research when on rotation with our faculty.
