Product Design and Evaluation

Our ergonomic product consulting services provide usability evaluation for existing products as well as prototype for product lines.  We use direct objective and indirect subjective methods for usability testing to reduce and prevent musculoskeletal disorders as well as improve performance and design.

The OIOC has a wide range of capabilities for integrated direct measurement devices such as:

·         Force/Pressure – to assess force capabilities and excessive forces or to identify pressures on surfaces
·         Three-Dimensional Motion Tracking – to assess motion patterns and postural deviations
·         Electromyography (EMG) – to assess muscle activity in terms of onset, relative effort, and fatigue

Indirect measurement such interviews, focus group meetings, surveys will also provide essential information for the development and evaluation of a product.

The OIOC has consulted with numerous firms for biomechanical and ergonomic product evaluation.  The OIOC research staff also has capabilities to assist in both product designs in addition to product usability evaluation.

This service enables designers and small businesses to submit their products to high-quality testing at affordable prices. The results can be used to demonstrate adherence to safety guidelines and comfort, giving the product an edge in performance and marketing.

The ergonomic assessment is also necessary to get medical devices approved by the FDA or adhere to functional performance criteria set by Section 508 under the Rehabilitation Act.
