In 1990, the OIOC received a 5-year grant from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Centers for Disease Control (NIOSH/CDC). to establish a Model Clinic for the treatment of occupational low back pain and the prevention of chronic disability. It was funded again in 1996 by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Disorders and, the National Institutes of Health (NIAMS/NIH) to take the Model Clinic into the next millennium. Currently, the OIOC has been designated as a Center of Excellence for its clinical services; its model clinic provides multidisciplinary, evidence-based care to patients with musculoskeletal disorders and successfully returns them to their previous level of function. 
 
The OIOC has trained clinical staff from a variety of industries including insurance companies, utility companies, medical institutions, and transportation companies, abroad and in the United States, to implement the three-phase Model Clinic Program.

The model consists of:

Phase One: Education at the primary care facility
Phase Two: Clinical Practice - Patient evaluation and treatment at primary and secondary care facilities
Phase Three: Research and Evaluation
