The OIOC approach to pain and disability reflects the belief that work-related musculoskeletal disorders result from the interaction between environmental and individual factors. Research has clearly established that everyday stress and negative thoughts and moods can contribute to physical pain. Unrelenting pain may, in turn, become a stressor in and of itself. OIOC's Cognitive-Behavioral Pain Management Program helps the individual take responsibility for his or her well being by offering new ways of coping with stress and pain. Patients are educated about different stress-management techniques; these techniques help the patient break out of the stress-pain cycle.
Cognitive-behavioral pain management may be conducted in conjunction with physical therapy and other recommended treatments, or may be conducted independently, depending on the needs of the patient. Intervention is usually brief (2-8 sessions). However, long term treatment is also available if indicated.
In addition to the psychological services offered to our patients, the OIOC offers a corporate stress management program tailored for companies that want to assess and manage the level of stress within the company to improve their employee’s performance and job satisfaction.
