Experimental Animal and Exposure Core: Services

The NYUCI Experimental Animal and Exposure Core Laboratory's integrated Animal Care and Exposure Unit and Inhalation Exposure Unit provide services to support the scientific needs of cancer-related animal research in carcinogenesis models and carcinogen administration.

Research Assistance

  1. Delivery of carcinogenic/toxic chemicals, infectious agents, intervention compounds (e.g., chemoprevention or anticancer drugs), to a wide range of animal species using inhalation, parenteral, dermal, and oral administration exposure routes
  2. Radiation equipment and support for skin irradiation of laboratory animals with electrons, UVR (UVA, UVB and solar), and X-ray
  3. Specialized support services to generate and sample (for characterization) controlled test atmospheres of animal exposure studies and to conduct inhalation exposures of animals
  4. Specialized handling, disposal and necropsy services for animals exposed to highly toxic agents such as carcinogenic and hazardous agents

Specialized Animal Care

  1. Animal Biosafety Level-2 (ABSL-2) and negative pressure isolator housing
  2. Animal health monitoring
  3. Segregated special facilities (e.g., segregated housing, exhaust/containment systems) and health monitoring of animals that do not yet have a proven virus-antibody-free (VAF) status or that carry transplantable tumors that have not yet been MAP tested (i.e., tested for rodent viruses)


The Experimental Animal and Exposure Core Laboratory provides comprehensive consultation in the following areas:

  1. Use of experimental animals in environmental health science research
  2. Animal models of human disease
  3. Methods of inhalation and other exposures to carcinogens and toxicants
  4. Approaches to generating and characterizing controlled test atmospheres for animal exposure studies, including appropriate and efficient sampling strategies and selection of appropriate sampling and analytical methods for experimental animal exposure atmospheres

The Experimental Animal & Exposure Laboratory is a formal satellite laboratory of the AAALAC-accredited Central Animal Facility and Division of Laboratory Animal Resources at NYUSOM which provides veterinary care supervision and oversight.

Animal Care and Exposure Unit

The Animal Care and Exposure Unit houses rodents, guinea pigs, rabbits, fowl, and non-human primates, with the following special areas:

  • 2 special separate housing areas: 2 rooms adjacent to the chamber area of the Inhalation Unit and 2 integrated chambers in the South wing animal housing area
  • separate housing area (2 rooms) adjacent to the chamber area of the Inhalation Unit
  • nose-only exposure area
  • small double corridor barrier unit (3 rooms) for rodent housing under secure SPF conditions and for long-term studies
  • 4 biosafety Level-2 rooms. 2 of these rooms have a fixed type I exhaust hood and 2 rooms are flexibly assigned with moveable type II biohazard hoods, of which there are 3 available. These rooms can be flexibly assigned to work with infectious agents or human tumors transplanted into immunocompromised mice or as containment rooms for carcinogen treatment (with local exhaust)
  • multiple containment rooms for carcinogen treatment (without local exhaust)
  • 2 rooms with special equipment for the treatment and housing of immunocompromised animals (nude mice, SCID mice)
  • specialized glove-box type isolator housing for animals treated with carcinogens or infectious agents within the Inhalation Unit. Overflow of Biosafety Level-2 experiments is also accommodated, and the glove-box isolators offer the opportunity to work at Biosafety Level-3
  • cage washer and cage cleaning area
  • necropsy room
  • treatment/procedure room

Animal radiation services and equipment are available for irradiation of skin of laboratory animals:

  • 2.5 meV van de Graaff Generator capable of accelerating electrons or protons at precise dose rates and energies up to the maximum of the machine.
  • UVR source (series of four 24-inch fluorescent tubes mounted in a portable enclosure currently housed in one of the animal rooms). A radiometer is available for quantifying the UVR exposure rates. Available regions of the UVR spectrum are:
    • solar spectrum simulation (280 to 360 nm)
    • primarily UVB (290 to 310 nm)
    • primarily UVA (>310 nm)
  • germicidal (exactly 250 nm)
  • 100 keV (unfiltered) X-ray machine (Grenz ray machine) capable of irradiating at dose rates up to about 2.0 Gy per minute.

Inhalation Exposure Unit

  • 27 dynamic, stainless steel, glass, and Plexiglas Laskin-type inhalation exposure chambers, including 4 glove-box type units
  • 7 small Plexiglas exposure chambers used for head-only exposures
  • 10 Teflon or stainless steel nose-only exposure chambers units for rats, guinea pigs, and rabbits
  • specialized glove-box isolator housing for animals treated with carcinogens or infectious agents
  • quarters used to house animals undergoing unique pulmonary exposures or quarantine
  • completely equipped combustion furnaces (250 sq ft), and particle concentrator laboratory
  • supplementary calibration facilities and sampling equipments with the following analytical chemistry equipment
  • 2 gas chromatographs
  • 2 UV-visible spectrophotometers
  • 4 infrared gas analyzers
  • several ozone and sulfuric and nitric acid analyzers
  • particle measurement equipment
  • an array of specialized equipment for the generation of highly standardized gaseous, vapor, and particulate inhalation atmospheres of different composition, including a cigarette-smoke generator (for both main-stream and side-stream smoke)

Other Available Animal Laboratories

NYUCI members also have access to the Centralized Animal Facilities at the Manhattan campus of the NYU School of Medicine. No specialized exposure and inhalation services or technical support are provided by these animal facilities.

  1. Berg Central Animal Laboratory, a conventional laboratory including two Biosafety Level-2 rooms accommodating 6 different species
  2. Skirball Central Animal Laboratory, a limited barrier laboratory for VAF rodents (mostly mice), including Biosafety Level-2 room
