This outlines the circumstances under which the NYU School of Medicine will reimburse medical students for commuting to education-related activities and the types of commuting that will be reimbursed.
- Students may be reimbursed for commuting to and from off-site pre-clinical required courses and clinical rotations only. Other than the exceptions outlined below, reimbursement will be limited to the cost of public transportation (i.e., bus, subway, Long Island Railroad). Note that a receipt must be submitted for each expense and receipts older than 3 months will not be accepted.
- Exceptions:
- Taxi and car service fare in Manhattan will only be reimbursed for travel between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., Monday through Sunday. A receipt is required.
- Every attempt should be made to take the Shuttle Bus to/from North Shore. If you miss the Shuttle Bus, LIRR expenses will be paid plus taxi and car service fare to/from the Manhasset or Great Neck train stations and North Shore. Note that taxi and car service to North Shore will not be reimbursed from any other location except to/from the Manhasset or Great Neck LIRR train stations. Reimbursement for the taxi or car service will be up to a maximum of $10 plus tip. Also, remember that “Exception 1” applies to cabs taken in Manhattan to/from Penn Station to go to North Shore only between 9:00pm and 6:00am. A receipt is required.
- Special circumstances must be discussed in advance with Cindy Godoy, Administrative Assistant, or Mel Rosenfeld, Associate Dean for Curriculum.
- Commuting to electives is not reimbursed.
Note: Students are requested to use these services in groups whenever possible. The Dean’s Office will provide recommended car services and cost guidelines.
