Division of Obstetric & Gynecologic Ultrasound

In the Division of Obstetric and Gynecologic Ultrasound, part of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at NYU Langone Health, we use sonography to identify potential obstetric, medical, or fetal problems as early as possible, and to provide clinically relevant diagnoses of gynecologic diseases. This clinical mission enriches the education of our medical students, residents, and fellows and enhances research in obstetrics, gynecology, and oncology.

Our trainees rotate through NYU Langone’s Ultrasound Unit—OB/GYN, a diagnostic referral center featuring advanced sonographic technology that enables expert evaluation of our gynecologic and gynecologic oncology patients.

In addition, our clinical research projects are led by Karen Duncan, MD, division director of gynecologic ultrasound, and Young Mi Lee, MD, division director of obstetrics ultrasound.

Our Role in Education

Our division works closely with the department’s medical students and residents to guide them through the latest medical and technological advances in ultrasound.

Training for Medical Students

During a six-week clerkship in obstetrics and gynecology, students at NYU Grossman School of Medicine shadow division clinicians as they see patients on the Ultrasound Unit—OB/GYN.

Training for Residents

First- and second-year residents complete ultrasound rotations in the division. Each week, the resident spends three days on the Ultrasound Unit—OB/GYN and one day at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue receiving hands-on training in transvaginal ultrasonography and fetal imaging. Residents also evaluate the scans from other sonographers in the division.

Dr. Duncan lectures residents on OB /G YN ultrasound and the latest developments in the field. She is readily available to answer any patient care questions that arise. Learn more about the residency program in obstetrics and gynecology.

Our Role in Research

The division’s research efforts have advanced the field of obstetric and gynecologic ultrasound. We’re currently applying our research to the sonographic workup of complicated ovarian scans using guidelines from the International Ovarian Tumor Analysis group.

Prior research conducted within the division includes assessing the use of a cervical ripening double balloon catheter under ultrasound guidance as a treatment for cervical and cesarean scar pregnancy; using transvaginal ultrasound to assess whether the position of the uterus changes after cesarean delivery; diagnosing first-trimester invasive placenta via ultrasound in high-risk women; and determining the ultrasound characteristics of endometriosis and borderline ovarian tumors.

Our Role in Patient Care

The Ultrasound Unit—OB/GYN is a diagnostic referral center staffed by highly trained sonographers who provide women with advanced fetal imaging and transvaginal ultrasound to detect of gynecologic diseases such as ovarian cancer and endometriosis. We also conduct early evaluation and treatment of cesarean scar pregnancy, a precursor of placenta accreta disorders.

Each of our sonographers is accredited by the Accreditation Commission of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine. Dr. Duncan and Dr. Lee receive referrals from the tristate area and beyond.

Our Faculty

Our division faculty are highly skilled in the performance of obstetric and gynecologic ultrasound.
