Division of Obstetrical and Gynecological Ultrasound

Director: Ilan Timor-Tritsch, MD

Our division is home of the NYU Obstetrical and Gynecological Ultrasound Unit, a world-class diagnostic referral center. However, our work identifying potential obstetrical, medical or fetal problems as early as possible and providing clinically relevant diagnoses of gynecologic diseases goes beyond patient care, to enrich the education of our medical students and residents and to enhance ongoing research in obstetrics, gynecology and oncology.

Our Role in Research

As part of the premiere research institution that is NYU Langone Medical Center, the members of our division are actively involved in ongoing clinical and basic science studies. They are also the authors of a multitude of articles, book chapters and case reports used throughout the nation.

Our Role in Education

Our unique role in providing both gynecological and obstetrical consultative care gives us twice as much to share with tomorrow’s physicians. Members of our division actively participate with the department’s medical students, residents and fellows to guide them through the latest medical and technological advances in ultrasound.

Medical Students: We provide didactic lectures and occasionally serve as preceptors for the medical students during the 6-week clerkship in obstetrics and gynecology. Learn more about the clerkship in obstetrics and gynecology.

Residents: ObGyn residents rotate through our division in their second year. They spend four weeks in the NYU Obstetrical and Gynecological Ultrasound Unit, where their ultrasound training supplements the "high-risk" obstetrical experience and allows residents to hone their skills in transvaginal ultrasonography. Our members also assist residents with various presentations that are required during the course of the 4-year program in obstetric and gynecology. Learn more about the residency program in obstetrics and gynecology.

Fellows: Our members deliver weekly lectures to maternal-fetal medicine fellows who participate in our department’s three-year program that leads to board certification. Learn more about the fellowship program in maternal-fetal medicine.

Our Role in Patient Care

The Obstetric & Gynecologic Ultrasound group is a world-class diagnostic referral center. Dr. Ilan E. Timor-Tritsch, Director, and Dr. Ana Monteagudo, Associate Director, are internationally recognized experts in their field. The unit is staffed by highly-trained sonographers, as well as maternal-fetal medicine specialists (perinatologists), who provide coverage. We are accredited by the Accreditation Commission of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, as well as the Fetal Medicine Foundation.
