Breast Cancer Care at the NYUCI

For many women, a breast cancer diagnosis comes as a shock. Many cancers are diagnosed at an early stage, thanks to screening tests such as mammography or breast self-examination. As a result, a woman with no family history of the disease who hears the words "You have breast cancer" may feel as if she's been blindsided.

"A diagnosis of breast cancer seemingly comes out of nowhere for women who are typically otherwise healthy," explains Lisa Sevanick, LCSW, Senior Social Worker in the NYU Cancer Institute's Supportive Services Program. The program helps women and their loved ones get through what can be a lengthy and difficult experience. Weeks may pass between the initial diagnosis, staging of the cancer, molecular subtyping, and the final choice of treatment. "It can be a traumatic experience. The whole process is emotionally overwhelming," adds Ms. Sevanick.

The NYU Cancer Institute's multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals tailors an individualized regimen of care for each woman with breast cancer. Radiologists well-versed in the latest imaging technologies work with breast surgeons who operate as conservatively as possible. For women who need chemotherapy, medical oncologists offer innovative anticancer drugs to reduce the risk of recurrence. Those requiring radiation therapy can rest assured that the NYUCI's radiation oncologists are at the forefront of providing highly targeted treatment. Women who choose reconstruction can consult with NYU Medical Center's renowned Breast Plastic Surgery Center to achieve an optimal result. And the NYUCI's Supportive Services professionals stand ready to assist all patients during what can be a lengthy and difficult journey.
