Same Day Admit

• The Same Day Admit Unit serves both pediatric and adult patients in the immediate pre-operative period for elective surgical procedures. The registered professional nurse provides competent compassionate care by assessing the patients’ physical, psychological and spiritual readiness to undergo a surgical procedure. 
• The Same Day Admit nurse acts as an advocate for the patient and family and intervenes with the appropriate discipline when the patient readiness is determined to be inadequate.
• Pre-operative patients require nursing interventions to decrease anxiety prior to entering the operating room. The Same Day Admit staff provides complementary interventions based on the individual need of the patient, including but not limited to:
• Mind-body stress reduction techniques:
  • Focused breathing
  • Prayer time
  • Guided imagery
  • Music therapy
  • Therapeutic touch
• In addition, the RN is responsible for reviewing the electronic data in ONBASE and ICIS as patients are evaluated for surgery in Pre Admission Testing. This includes utilizing our excellent communication skills with the interdisciplinary team of surgeons and anesthesiologists as issues arise regarding the completeness of chart documents prior to surgery (i.e. abnormal labs, medical clearance, history and physical exam).
• All members of the staff are true patient advocates and intervene as necessary to address all needs of the pre-operative patient.
