HCC-10 Psychiatry

  • 22  bed voluntary, acute inpatient unit
  • Patient population consists of adult, geriatric and adolescent patients who are primarily admitted for:
    • Major depression
    • Bipolar disorder
    • Schizophrenia
    • Schizo-affective disorder
    • Oppositional defiant disorder
  • Care is focused assisting the patient to reach his or her pre-morbid level of functioning.  Most patients return home and resume employment or return to school with referral to a private psychiatrist.  Others are discharged to more structured and comprehensive psychiatric services. 
  • Primary Nursing enhances the quality of patient care by
    • Providing the patient with consistency and the benefit of a therapeutic relationship
    • Increasing individual RN accountability for assessment, planning, teaching and discharge planning from admission to discharge
  • Nursing care includes milieu treatment, individual psychotherapy, group therapy, development and implementation of individualized behavioral plans and adolescent protocols, psycho-education, participation in family meetings, administration of medication regimens, and care of patients receiving electro-convulsive therapy. 
  • RNs attend daily interdisciplinary rounds and collaborate with:
    • Psychiatrists
    • Nursing Leadership
    • Social Workers
    • Recreation Therapists
    • Clinical Pharmacists
    • Pastoral Care Staff
    • Nursing Attendants
  • 8 week orientation includes classroom training taught by our nursing education department and clinical orientation with a preceptor.  Ongoing clinical supervision is available following orientation.
