Swallow Study

Certain neurological conditions can impair a patient's ability to swallow. If there is some question as to whether a patient can safely be allowed to eat, a swallow study can be done. This involves taking X-rays of the patient while he/she eats food and liquids mixed with barium. This test is done under the supervision of a speech pathologist who determines how well the patient is able to swallow foods of various consistencies.
