Residents are strongly urged to take their internship year at the NYU/Bellevue Medical Center. During this year, trainees will rotate on a variety of surgical specialty services (cardiovascular surgery, peripheral vascular surgery, ICU, general surgery, neurology and neuroradiology) to enhance their ability to care for critically ill neurological patients using a multidiciplinary approach.
The American Board of Neurosurgery requires three months of clinical neurology at the parent institution and NYU neurosurgical residents rotate on the neurology service for three months during their internship. This time is spent within the NYU Department of Neurology on the Bellevue Hospital neurology service where the neurosurgery resident functions as a neurology resident. Daily ward rounds with an attending neurology faculty member provide both supervision and didactic teaching. Bellevue hospital is famous for training superb clinicians with a hands-on approach.
