Tendon Transfers

If nerve repair does not work, or if it is too late for nerve surgery, then tendon transfers may be helpful. This is when you cut a functioning tendon and re-attach it so that it now performs a new, more desired function. Common examples include:

  • A posterior tibialis tendon transfer for foot drop
  • Steindler flexorplasty for continued arm flexion weakness after brachial plexus injury
  • Forearm tendon transfers for finger extension

As long as joint mobility remains normal, tendon transfers can be performed years after injury.
