Stephen Russell, M.D.

Stephen Russell, MD,
Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery

Dr. Russell is a neurosurgeon who specializes in the surgical treatment of nerves outside the brain and spine. This includes nerve injuries, nerve tumors, nerve compressions, and brachial plexus injuries. Dr. Russell completed medical school and his neurosurgical residency at NYU School of Medicine. After residency, he was awarded the prestigious Van Wagenen Fellowship from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons to study peripheral nerve surgery for one year in both Europe and America. During this period, he visited multiple medical centers learning a wide spectrum of peripheral nerve techniques from experienced nerve surgeons. He completed a clinical fellowship in New Orleans with Drs. Kline and Tiel, who are experts in the field of peripheral nerve surgery.

Dr. Russell started his academic practice at NYU Medical Center in July 2005. Because of his extensive training, he manages focal peripheral nerve problems anywhere in the body. Furthermore, his neurosurgical training allows him to treat complicated peripheral nerve tumors and injuries near the spine or cranium. For these reasons, he has become one of the busiest peripheral nerve surgeons in the New York City area. In addition to his practice at NYU Medical Center, he also cares for patients with peripheral nerve problems at Bellevue Hospital and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He also spends a portion of his week conducting both clinical and laboratory research in the field of peripheral nerve injury and regeneration. Dr. Russell has published over thirty manuscripts, a book on the examination and diagnosis of peripheral nerve injury, and speaks both nationally and internationally on this topic.
