Spinal dysraphism is a diverse group of conditions that may occur during development of the spinal cord and spine. Examination of the overlying skin may suggest the presence underlying abnormality of the spinal cord or nerves. They include a lump or bump, a hairy patch, hemangioma (red spot), abnormal opening of the skin, asymmetry of the gluteal crease or muscles.
Neurologic symptoms may include pain in the back and legs, or weakness of the legs or feet. Urological symptoms may include incontinence, retention or recurrent urinary tract infections. Many of these conditions require surgery to alleviate symptoms and prevent progressive neurological, orthopedic or urological problems.
