Hypotension refers to low blood pressure. Hypotension can be caused by a variety of different factors, including problems with the heart (cardiogenic), loss of blood volume (hemorrhagic), systemic infections (sepsis), or from dysfunction of the central nervous system (neurogenic).
There are various strategies to treat hypotension, including giving intravenous (IV) fluids or donated blood products or using medications, commonly called "pressors", to raise the blood pressure.
