Intensive Care

Respiratory Failure
Respiratory failure occurs when a patient is unable to either obtain enough oxygen or to exhale enough carbon dioxide, or both.

Hypotension
Hypotension refers to low blood pressure, which can be caused by a variety of different factors.

Hypertension
Hypertension refers to elevated blood pressure, which can be very problematic and potentially dangerous in the Neurosurgery Intensive Care Unit.

Coagulopathy
Coagulopathic patients may need to receive transfusions of blood products and/or vitamin K prior to having surgery or to prevent further bleeding.

Blood Clots
Neurosurgery patients are particularly prone to developing abnormal blood clots because they are frequently bed-bound while in the ICU.
