Select medical students between their 2nd and 3rd years of school may elect to spend an 8 week rotation on the neurosurgical services at Tisch Hospital. Students function as important members of the surgical teams, participating in rounds, conference, and surgeries.
Hours may be long and approach 60-80hrs/week if they also elect to spend a few days taking emergency call with the residents. Students meet and work side-by-side with most of the neurosurgery residents and attendings at NYU. Many subsequently become involved with clinical research projects during their latter years of medical school.
This intensive allows students to fully understand what neurosurgery is all about so they can make an educated decision about whether it is for them or not. There are 3 positions available each summer, and although NYU students are given priority, outside medical students are also eligible. A cash stipend is provided.
