NYU medical students and students from other medical schools can have a 4 week experience on the NYU neurosurgical service. These are senior medical students, although on occasion third-year students have rotated during elective periods. They usually spend 2 weeks on each of the two adult services at Tisch University Hospital. They make rounds with the residents, go to the operating room, work-up patients for critique by the resident and attending staff, and prepare presentations for the various conferences.
Traditionally, medical students who have rotated on Neurosurgery are usually interested in pursuing a career in Neurosurgery and want to see at close hand how the residency works.
