At NYU School of Medicine, when a student develops an interest in one or more fields of medicine, they are encouraged to have an attending physician in each respective field assigned to them as a mentor/sponsor.
If you have an interest in neurosurgery, a member of the department will become available to assist you with your decision to become a neurosurgeon. Mentors periodically meet with their mentees to answer questions, provide guidance, and even discuss potential research projects. They coordinate visits to office hours, rounds, and the operating room as desired. When match time approaches, they assist with personal statements, where to apply, where and when to perform subinternships, and from whom to obtain reference letters.
