Neurology Clerkship
During their four-week core neurology clerkship at NYU, medical students are given two didactic neurosurgery lectures pertaining to neurosurgical emergencies and restorative/functional neurosurgery. When inpatients on the neurology service go to the operating room for a neurosurgical procedure, medical students following these patients are encouraged to observe at surgery.
Surgery Clerkship
During the core surgery clerkship, neurosurgery is not a scheduled elective. However, when student are interested in a brief one week elective on the neurosurgery service they can request to switch from a pre-scheduled subspecialty rotation to one in neurosurgery. This request is made to the clerkship director. In general, the student is assigned to an attending or chief resident who is responsible for their one-week experience. This is an excellent opportunity for students who are interested in neurology, psychiatry, and/or neurosurgery.
