Structure of the Clinical Neurosurgery Training Program

Postgraduate Year 1: Internship
Trainees rotate on a variety of surgical specialty services to enhance their ability to care for neurological patients.

Postgraduate Years 2 & 3: Clinical Neurosurgery, Neuropathology, Neuroradiology
Six clinical neurosurgery rotations provide the basic skills and knowledgebase for the diagnosis and management of neurosurgical problems.

Postgraduate Year 4: Pediatrics/Epilepsy
A six-month pediatric neurosurgery neurosurgery rotation is paired with six months in the epilepsy, stereotactic and functional neurosurgical service.

Postgraduate Year 5: Research/Elective
Residents have a choice of spending this year in research laboratories or taking an elective in a subspecialty area of neurosurgery.

Postgraduate Year 6: Clinical Neurosurgery (Chief Year #1)
During this year trainees function as chief residents on an adult neurosurgery team at Tisch Hospital.

Postgraduate Year 7: Clinical Neurosurgery (Chief Year #2)
This second chief year gives residents extensive, semi-independent clinical and surgical experience.
