Bellevue Hospital

Bellevue Hospital, founded in 1736, is America’s oldest public hospital, and housed the country’s first maternity ward, ambulance service, and emergency pavilion. Originally containing only six beds, Bellevue now has more than 1,000.

Approximately 300 neurosurgical procedures are done here yearly, making it the busiest neurosurgical service in New York’s municipal system. Bellevue is a citywide referral center for neurosurgery, heart surgery, and trauma, including microsurgery and extremity replantation. Due to its diversity of patients, it sees a wide array of neurologic disease.

A dedicated neurosurgical operating room is used for elective procedures three to four days per week. Critically ill patients are managed in a brand-new six-bed neurosurgical ICU. Intervential neuroradiology for the treatment of brain tumors, vascular malformations, and brain aneurysms is also available 24 hours a day.
