Thank you for your interest in NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s neurology residency program. Our program’s mission is to train outstanding clinical neurologists and to nurture clinical and basic neuroscience research interests in our residents. We aim to be innovators in neurological education and to provide state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic services to care for patients from a diversity of backgrounds.
A highlight of our program is the depth and breadth of exposure trainees have to the world of neurology. Our three inpatient sites at various locations at NYU Langone Health, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and the Manhattan campus of the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System provide the opportunity to learn from and care for patients of different backgrounds, ethnicities, languages, and resources in just a 10-block radius in midtown Manhattan. Our faculty’s expertise spans 19 subspecialties of neurology, and residents receive training in these areas through subspecialty clinic rotations, electives, and an ambulatory urgent care to hone diagnostic and management skills in the outpatient setting.
Residents engage in scholarly activity in the basic and clinical neurosciences, education research, and quality improvement projects. Through our Patient-Oriented Research Curriculum, also known as PORC, we pair research faculty with trainees to explore the various aspects of research and assist in getting projects off the ground. Each spring we highlight our residents’ work through platforms and posters at our Annual Neurology Research Symposium. Many of our residents have presented their work at national meetings including the American Academy of Neurology.
In addition to emphasizing clinical care, education, and research, it is equally important to cultivate interpersonal communication and professionalism skills among our residents. We do so through an innovative, interactive curriculum at the New York Simulation Center for the Health Sciences (NYSIM). The simulation center is also used to build skills such as running stroke codes, lumbar punctures, examining the fundus, and approaching brain death.
We value our residents’ feedback and are always seeking ways to grow, innovate, and thrive. Our bimonthly resident forums, formal mentoring program, wellness curriculum, and regular social gatherings allow us to form strong relationships and collaborate as a solid team.

Manhattan Track Residency Program Overview
The Manhattan track of our neurology residency program provides residents with a well-rounded education, setting them on the path to becoming tomorrow’s leading neurologists. Residents gain experience with diverse patient populations and the full range of neurological disorders, all within a 10-block radius. Our program’s leadership and mentors treat our residents as future colleagues, and many residents stay on here for subspecialty training or to accept faculty positions.
We provide many opportunities to enhance your learning experience, including a dynamic Patient-Oriented Research Curriculum, an exceptional mentorship program, and integrated exposure to the state-of-the-art NYSIM.
Each year we accept 11 new residents into our 3-year, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)–accredited neurology residency program in Manhattan. Graduates are eligible to take the certification examination offered by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Internships are available at NYU Langone as well. We also offer the opportunity to simultaneously match for an internship in medicine and the three-year neurology residency training program.

Inpatient Rotations for Manhattan-Track Residents
Residents gain inpatient experience at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System. Teams may include neurology residents, residents and attending physicians from the Departments of Psychiatry and Neurosurgery, and medical students completing required and elective rotations.
Our neurology consult teams respond to consultation requests from emergency services, inpatient units, and all critical care areas throughout the hospitals. Attending physicians hold frequent rounds and are always available to discuss cases and treat patients. Radiology, pathology, and case conferences complement direct patient care.
Rotations at Tisch Hospital and Bellevue include ward and consultation services. At Tisch Hospital, the neurology service is staffed by neurology residents and neurology nurse practitioners. The latter play a major role on the team and aid in the management of patients on the service so that residents have the flexibility to attend conferences and focus on furthering their education. Our conference and seminar room is thoroughly furnished with the latest multimedia equipment.
The neurology service at Bellevue consists of an active inpatient service, consultation services, and comprehensive ambulatory adult neurological services. Our patient population encompasses the full range of neurological disorders. While in the care of our neurological service, they receive comprehensive care from our house staff, with close supervision by attending physicians. The hospital offers radiological, neurophysiological, and laboratory services, including interventional radiology.
The VA NY Harbor Healthcare System’s Manhattan hospital, located at First Avenue and 23rd Street, is a tertiary care facility providing care in all medical and surgical specialties. The neurology service at this hospital is an active consultative service. Residents also participate in ambulatory clinics in general neurology and multiple subspecialties.
Outpatient Rotations for Manhattan-Track Residents
Manhattan-track residents have one or two half-day continuity clinics for the three years they are in the program. Each resident sees patients in his or her own spacious, attractive examining room at Bellevue and the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System’s Manhattan hospital. Neurology attending physicians supervise each clinic, and nursing and clerical staff assist residents in providing courteous and expeditious care.
NYU Langone also has a pediatric outpatient neurology clinic where pediatric, child neurology, and adult neurology residents care for children with neurological disorders.
Residents rotate through NYU Langone’s faculty practice subspecialty clinics. This provides broad exposure to ambulatory and urgent care rotations.
Night Float Rotations for Manhattan-Track Residents
Second– and third–postgraduate year (PGY-2 and PGY-3) neurology residents cover Tisch Hospital, Bellevue, and the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System’s Manhattan hospital on a night float system. One resident covers Bellevue in-house while an additional senior resident provides supervision from home if needed. At Tisch Hospital, there are two residents assigned to cover consults, ward services, and the neurointensive care unit (neuro-ICU). Night float residents are on overnight in-house call from Sunday night through Friday night.
Tisch Hospital night float starts at 6:00PM and ends at 7:00AM the next morning. During weekdays, the Tisch Hospital night float resident covers the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center after 9:00PM. During weekends, the Tisch night float resident covers both Tisch Hospital and the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. With close supervision by the on-call neuro-ICU attending, PGY-3 and PGY-4 residents provide overnight neuro-ICU coverage.
At Bellevue and the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System’s Manhattan hospital, night float rotations also begin at 6:00PM and end at 7:00AM the next morning. During weekends, the on-call PGY-4 resident rounds on new patients and follows up on active consults.
Saturday is a traditional 24-hour call at both Tisch Hospital and Bellevue.
In total, PGY-2 residents have approximately eight weeks of night float per year, and PGY-3 residents typically have four to five weeks of night float per year. PGY-4 residents have approximately two weeks of neuro-ICU night float, with the rest being home call, totaling approximately six weeks per year.
Call rooms at NYU Langone’s inpatient locations are equipped with computers, which you can use for placing orders and viewing films, as well as access high-speed internet, a TV, a bed, a desk, and a mini refrigerator.
