The Department of Neurology offers a one-year Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology (AUPO)–approved fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology. Under the direction of Janet C. Rucker, MD, fellows gain the knowledge and comprehensive experience needed to expertly diagnose and manage patients with neuro-ophthalmologic disorders.

As a fellow, you treat patients at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital and Neuro-Ophthalmology Program under the direction of Dr. Rucker and Steven L. Galetta, MD; Laura J. Balcer, MD, MSCE; Floyd A. Warren, MD; Cinthi Pillai, MD; Doria M. Gold, MD; and Scott N. Grossman, MD. You also have the opportunity to see patients in the Multiple Sclerosis Comprehensive Care Center, supervised by a multiple sclerosis attending physician. In addition, you can work closely with faculty in the Fresco Institute for Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders for exposure to expert diagnosis and treatment of typical and atypical movement disorders.

Research Opportunities for Fellows

Given the extensive research projects conducted by our physician–scientists in the Division of Neuro-Ophthalmology, fellows have the opportunity to conduct clinical research in a wide range of clinical vision disorders, including optic nerve, intracranial visual pathway, and eye movement disorders. We strongly encourage and mentor research involvement in all stages of research from project genesis to research recruitment and performance, presentation at national meetings, and manuscript writing.

Eligibility and Application

Eligible candidates must have completed a neurology or ophthalmology residency training program.

Prior to the 2024-2025 fellowship year, interested applicants should send their CV, a personal statement of less than one page, and three letters of recommendation to Dr. Rucker:
