Child Neurology Residency Rotations

During the first two years of the five-year child neurology residency program in NYU Langone’s Department of Neurology, residents receive general pediatric training through the Department of Pediatrics. This is followed by three years of neurology training, the latter two devoted primarily to child neurology. Rotations occur during the three years of neurology training.

First-Year Rotations

Adult neurology rotations take place in several locations, including NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and the Manhattan campus of the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System. Rotations include inpatient consult and ward-based adult neurology, inpatient and outpatient adult epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology, a comprehensive adult stroke service, and adult neurologic intensive care unit (ICU).

The first year consists of six months of inpatient adult neurology, three months of outpatient clinical adult neurology, and three months of elective adult neurology, including neuroradiology, neuropathology, and neurophysiology.

Second- and Third-Year Rotations

In each of your second and third years as a resident, you spend approximately six months on child neurology clinical services, including consult service, clinics, and epilepsy monitoring units at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital—34th Street, Tisch Hospital, or Bellevue.

In addition to the clinical services at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital—34th Street, Tisch Hospital, and Bellevue, you may also rotate at NYU Langone’s Rusk Rehabilitation, NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, and the Child Study Center.

Selective and elective child neurology rotations make up the other half of each year. These include neuroradiology, neuropathology, learning disorders, neurogenetics, neuromuscular disorders, neuro-ophthalmology, epilepsy, clinical neurophysiology, neurorehabilitation, neuro-oncology, dysautonomia, and child psychiatry. Throughout training, we encourage residents to participate in both research and quality improvement initiatives.

Inpatient Rotations

As you are participating in the adult neurology service during the first year of your child neurology residency program (CN-1), you treat inpatients at Tisch Hospital, Kimmel Pavilion, Bellevue, and the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System.

Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital—34th Street Rotations

Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital—34th Street is the main inpatient children’s hospital for NYU Langone. During your final (CN-2 and CN-3) years of neurology training, child neurology residents gain experience consulting on a broad array of both common and rare pediatric neurologic conditions working collaboratively on the pediatric wards and in pediatric and cardiovascular specialty ICUs.

Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion Rotations

Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion are the main inpatient hospitals of NYU Langone in Manhattan. During CN-1, child neurology residents gain experience with a broad array of neurological conditions, both primary neurological diseases and highly specialized conditions. This experience occurs on services such as the inpatient ward service, consult service, and stroke and neurological ICU services.

During your final (CN-2 and CN-3) years, the child neurology consult service collaborates with neonatal services located within the hospital.

Bellevue Rotations

The flagship hospital of New York City’s public hospital system, Bellevue serves city employees, the uninsured, and a wide variety of patients from all corners of the globe and with many rare diseases.

During CN-1, child neurology residents gain experience with a broad array of neurological conditions, both primary neurological diseases and highly specialized conditions primarily through consultation and adult epilepsy services.

During CN-2 and CN-3, you participate in a child neurology consult service at Bellevue that provides care in conjunction with a wide variety of pediatric services in the hospital.

Residents are directly involved with all pediatric epilepsy cases; our capabilities include routine and video electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring and hands-on epilepsy education integrated throughout training.

VA NY Harbor Healthcare System Rotations

The Manhattan campus of the VA NY Harbor Healthcare system is a federal facility, caring for veterans of the U.S. military services. Located at First Avenue and 23rd Street, it is a tertiary care facility and provides care in all medical and surgical specialties.

During CN-1 as a child neurology resident, you care for adult patients with a broad variety of conditions, as well as receive considerable exposure to chronic pain conditions and long-term effects of traumatic brain injury.

Outpatient Rotations

Throughout all three years of child neurology training, our residents participate in their own child neurology continuity clinic, which is located in the ambulatory care center at Bellevue. You see your own continuity patients a minimum of a half day each week throughout training. For three months in each of your last two years of training, that time increases by an additional two half days per week while you are on the outpatient clinical service with an additional half day of private child neurology at the 41st Street Ambulatory Care Center. This provides exposure to a broad spectrum of patients, both diagnostically and demographically, and an exceptionally rich outpatient child neurology experience throughout training.

During CN-1, residents also have a half day of adult neurology clinic at Bellevue, ensuring solid experience with adult outpatient neurology conditions and management.

While on selective and elective rotations, residents receive additional training in outpatient child neurology management in both subspecialty and private practice settings, to gain experience in such areas as child development; dysautonomia; epilepsy; neuro-oncology, neurofibromatosis, and tuberous sclerosis; neuromuscular diseases; neurologic rehabilitation; neurogenetics and neurometabolic disease; neuro-ophthalmology; and general child neurology private practice.

Night Float

During CN-1, child neurology residents participate in the same call pool as the adult neurology residents, with night and weekend services that include a night float system during the week. Residents are included in the call rotation covering all adult neurology sites, including Tisch Hospital and the Kimmel Pavilion, Bellevue, and the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System.

CN-2 and CN-3 child neurology residents supervise calls from home by telephone utilizing remote electronic access to all sites while in-house neurology residents attend to urgent consults or other clinical matters. On rare occasions, child neurology residents must go to the hospital to assist junior residents or pediatricians.

All residents have at least one day in seven free from all clinical, educational, and administrative duties.

Resident Events

Our child neurology residents work hard learning the skills needed to become outstanding child neurologists, but find there are many opportunities to enjoy their time in New York City while bonding with their fellow residents. Throughout the year, our residents participate in numerous social activities and extracurricular events.

The collaborative and supportive community here in the Department of Neurology fosters camaraderie and friendship among residents that lasts well beyond the training years.
