In a joint statement, NYU and Mt. Sinai said, "As we moved into the final stages of our integration efforts it became clear to all of us that the structure we had originally envisioned could not be achieved. At the heart of our agreement was the unique link between the combined medical school, the university and the medical center and health system. In that, we saw the opportunity to ensure the continuity of the finest resarch, education abd patient care. We knew from the start that uniting these elements was a virtually unprecedented challenge, and, despite the extraordinary efforts of our Trustees and senior management over the past seven months, we could not find the appropriate way to combine the academic components of the two institutions.
"We fully expect to continue the many areas of collaboration that pre-existed our talks, as well as others we discovered in the process. We embarked upon this effort as two of the leading academic medical centers in the nation, and each will continue to flourish, as we serve all of our vital constituencies with the very finst medical care, research and education."
