In 2000, with a grant from a private foundation, The Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster Program was initiated with the intention of providing mind-body techniques to help patients cope with the stress and anxiety commonly associated with surgery.
In June of 2003, Jackie Levin, RN, MS was hired as Program Coordinator to manage and provide services to NYUMC patients. From that point on, the MindBody Education & Patient Care Program was establishd to include staff education as well as patient care. For several years, Jackie has been working with nurses and other healthcare professionals from a variety of clinical areas, who, in turn, have incorporated these strategies into the care of their patients.
In September of 2006, Tara Piergrossi was hired as Program Administrator to help promote the initiatives offered by the program with physicians and staff members. Now, 8 years since the commencement of the program, the demand to learn and offer mind-body modalities continues to grow.
