Figure 1. We use laser-scanning confocal micrscopy to study the subcellular localization of HPIP, a novel nucleocytoplasmic shuttle protein first identified by our lab. This micrograph shows transfected HeLa cells stained with an antibody against HPIP (labeled in green) and counterstained with a mitochondrial (in red). Wild type HPIP protein (panel a) is found throughout the cell including the mitochrondria (green overlayed on red gives orange). Panel b shows a mutant of HPIP that preferentially accumulates in the mitochondria. On-going studies hope to discover whether HPIP can ferry proteins from the nucleus to the mitochondria.
