Education and General Information

Graduate Education: University of Birmingham, United Kingdom 1989-1992

Post Doctoral Training: Cornell University, Ithaca NY 1993-1996; Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis MO 1996-2000

Andrew Darwin obtained his B.Sc. degree in Biochemistry from the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom, and his Ph.D degree at the University of Birmingham. During his graduate training he worked in the laboratories of Jeff Cole and Steve Busby to study anaerobic nitrite respiration in Escherichia coli. This interest in anaerobic metabolism was continued during postdoctoral training with Valley Stewart at Cornell University, during which time he investigated the mechanisms responsible for transcriptional regulation in response to nitrate and nitrite. Later he switched his focus to the genetic analysis of bacterial virulence mechanisms. As a Research Associate with Virginia Miller at Washington University School of Medicine, he identified many genes that allow Yersinia enterocolitica to cause an animal infection. He was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology at NYU School of Medicine in February 2001, and continues his research with Yersinia enterocolitica.
