Medications Development for Stimulant Dependence
Researchers: Malcolm S. Reid, PhD, Paul
Casadonte, MD, John Rotrosen, MD and others
Cocaine and amphetamine dependence are significant public health
problems. No pharmacological agent is currently approved for treatment
of cocaine and amphetamine dependence and treatment for addiction
to stimulants is primarily psychosocial and behavioral. In collaboration
with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the New York University
School of Medicine, Medications Development for Stimulant Dependence
(MDS) Clinical Trials Site runs studies to identify and develop
pharmacological agents to treat stimulant dependence. These studies
are run on a contract basis with the sponsor, NIDA. The primary
objective of this research collaboration is to conduct Phase I safety
and Phase II efficacy clinical trials with established and investigational
medications.
