We conduct a range of NIH-, VA- and industry- sponsored studies
aimed at developing medications to treat addictive disorders. Specific
areas of recent focus include dependence on alcohol, nicotine, cocaine,
methamphetamine, and opiates such as heroin and prescription pain
killers. Treatment studies seek to reduce the use of addictive substances,
to restore quality-of-life, and to collect important safety data.
Many of our studies in this area include a structured behavioral
therapy addressing psychosocial issues around substance use. In
addition to new medications some of our ongoing and planned studies
include innovative delivery systems for already marketed medications,
for example sublingual tablets, trans-dermal patches or long-acting
subcutaneous implants or injections.
