Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Clinical Research Program
Researchers: Lenard Adler, MD, Vatsal Thakkar, MD and others
This is an interdisciplinary program focused on diagnosis, treatment
and pathophysiology of ADHD in adults. Current studies include investigations
of novel non-stimulant and stimulant medications.
Stress Disorder Research Program
Researchers: Marion Eakin, MD, Kathlene Tracy,
PhD and others
Research on stress disorders is conducted both within the VA environment,
focusing largely on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and outside
of the VA looking at other populations. Currently serving an ethnically
diverse population of more than one thousand veterans, this individualized
outpatient treatment program is coordinated by a specialized interdisciplinary
team including social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, and
primary care clinicians. Treatment includes skills and psychotherapy
group treatments, individualized psychotherapies and counseling,
and psychopharmacologic management.
Community Research and Recovery Program
Researchers: Kathlene Tracy, PhD, Mark A. Burton, MA, John Rotrosen, MD, Adam Wolkin,
MD, Antonio Abad, MD, David Ruhland, PhD, Michael Kramer, PhD and
others
The goal of the program is to reduce patients’ psychiatric
and substance abuse symptoms by making changes in their daily environment
to promote healthier lifestyles. The program promotes the development
of innovative approaches that challenge belief systems about limits
on patients’ capabilities to improve treatments, reduce associated
stigma, and consequently provide environments where persons are
more likely to adhere to treatments that match their particular
goals in life.
National Drug Abuse Treatment
Clinical Trials Network-New York Node
Researchers: John Rotrosen, MD, Paul Casadonte, MD, Malcolm Reid,
PhD, Kathlene Tracy, PhD, Agatha Kulaga, MSW, Marc Galanter, MD, Mary Jeanne Kreek, MD, James Robinson, MEd,
Scott Kellogg, PhD, Marc Gourevitch, MD, Josh Lee, MD, Steve Kritz,
MD, Larry Brown, MD.
The missions of the Clinical Trials Network are (1) to conduct effectiveness
studies of behavioral and pharmacological interventions across a
wide range of community-based treatment settings in diverse clinical
populations, and (2) to disseminate the results of this research
to providers and their patients within the community using science
as a vehicle. The goal is to translate new medical and behavioral
treatments to the broader community. Protocols address substance
use disorders, infections and addiction, smoking cessation, issues
related to women and trauma, adolescent substance abuse, and HIV/AIDS.
Neurophysiology and Neuropharmacology
of Addictive Disorders
Researchers: Malcolm S. Reid, PhD and others
Current research includes a clinical lab to study the neurophysiology
and pharmacology of conditioned cocaine and alcohol craving, and
clinical treatment trials on experimental pharmacotherapies for
drug addiction. The clinical treatment trials involve studies on
opiate detoxification, cocaine addiction and smoking cessation.
The studies on craving examine the quantitative and neuroanatomical
EEG correlates of cocaine and alcohol craving and related anxiety/arousal
in response to cue presentation.
Addictions Medication Development
Researchers: Paul Casadonte, MD, John Rotrosen,
MD, Malcolm Reid, PhD
We conduct a range of NIH-, VA- and industry- sponsored studies
aimed at developing medications to treat addictive disorders. Specific
areas of recent focus include dependence on alcohol, nicotine, cocaine,
methamphetamine, and opiates such as heroin and prescription pain
killers.
Medications Development for
Stimulant Dependence
Researchers: Malcolm S. Reid, PhD, Paul Casadonte,
MD, John Rotrosen, MD and others
This is a National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) funded program
running phase I-III studies to identify and develop pharmacological
agents to treat cocaine and amphetamine dependence.
